D is for Duty

UK excise duty is a fixed cost set annually in the Chancellor’s Budget and charged in bands depending on the alcoholic strength of the beverage. For still table wines between 5.5% and 15% abv, the government takes almost £2 of every bottle as duty. As you can see, the ‘wine value’ of the overall cost of the £8.99 bottle is over 250% that of the £5.99 bottle, even though the retail price has increased by just 50%. Therefore, spending a little more actually gets you a much better value wine!
