Liberty Wines strengthens its Burgundy portfolio with Château de Santenay

We are pleased to announce our appointment as the exclusive agent for Château de Santenay, marking our ongoing commitment to sourcing the best quality and value from Burgundy in the face of escalating prices.

Château de Santenay has 72 hectares of vineyard in Mercurey in the Côte Chalonnaise and 25 hectares in the Côte d’Or, of which 18 are in the Côte de Beaune.  The 9th century property has seen considerable investment and a focus on quality in recent years by current owners CA Grands Crus, including a new winemaking team, extensively renovated winery and a move towards sustainability in the vineyard.

David Gleave MW, managing director at Liberty Wines, says: “Faced with price increases in the Côte d’Or due to a run of small vintages in 2011, 2012 and 2013, we looked to the Côte Chalonnaise to fill the gap for well-made and good value Burgundy in our portfolio.

“Château de Santenay’s extensive holding in Mercurey was of great interest to us and we are very excited to be listing their Mercurey Blanc, Mercurey Rouge and Mercurey 1er Cru ‘Les Puillets’ from the 2012 vintage, all of which have been sealed under screwcap at our request.  The quality of all their wines is excellent, displaying a fruit intensity and balance that show just how good the 2012 vintage was in Burgundy, despite the much reduced yields.”

Thierry Budin, general director of CA Grand Crus, comments: “With year-on-year sales growth, the UK and Ireland continue to be key markets for Burgundy’s wines.  I have known David Gleave for many years and, with Liberty Wines’ exceptional reputation and customer base in the on-trade and independent off-trade, I anticipate great things in 2014 for the Château de Santenay wines.”
