Gérard Néraudau made a name for this estate in 1999 with the vintage of that year and since then, joined by Patrick d‘Aulan, Château Valrose has been asserting its personality with fruity, elegant and powerful wines from this famed region of Bordeaux.

Vineyards

The estate covers five hectares of vineyard located on the plateau of Saint-Estèphe. The free-draining gravel soils have a good limestone content which gives the wines a distinct mineral character. The nearby Gironde plays an important role in the thermoregulation of the region, mitigating the often extreme weather conditions of this part of Bordeaux. The average age of the vines is 40 years old with a planting density of 8000 vines per hectare. Harvest is by parcel selection and always carried out by hand.

Vintage information

2006 was an interesting vintage. It got off to a good start with a good growing season. June and July were both hot months but in August the weather turned wet and cold. The beginning of September was good, dry and hot but by harvest time, the rain started again resulting in lower yields than in previous years.

Vinification

The grapes were hand picked into small crates with a second selection on the sorting table at the winery. Fermentation took place for 12 days at 28°C, followed by a further two weeks of maceration to extact good levels of colour and supple tannins. The wine was aged for 16 months in a mixture of 30% new French oak barrels, 40% 1 year old barrels and 30% 2 year old barrels.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby in colour with lively aromas of red fruits accompanied by touches of leather and hint of savoury spice. A medium to full bodied wine with rounded tannins and good levels of balancing acidity on the persistent finish. Drinking well now or to age for next 8-12 years.
