Grosset `Alea` Riesling

Clare Valley, South Australia

Jeffrey Grosset established his winery in 1981 in the historic township of Auburn, Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide - and 2015 marks the 35th Anniversary...

The winery is stylish and functional and reflects the attention to detail that extends to the Grosset estate-owned vineyards and winemaking. Jeff is best known for his iconic Rieslings - Polish Hill and Springvale - and he has almost single-handedly been responsible for the renaissance of Clare Valley Riesling. By combining a disciplined approach and decades of experience, Grosset consistently achieves the purest expression of variety and place.

The Alea Riesling comes from a narrow corridor of hard red rock with poor, orangey, red loam topsoil. As the early fruit from the vineyard reminded Jeff of the great German Rieslings, he decided to take a very different approach to the creation of Alea. The aim was to make a wine generous, succulent and long. While the  Grosset Springvale vineyard is a soft rock site of red loam over limestone, ‘Alea‘ is a hard rock site and the wines are distinctly different.

Vintage information

2015 was characterised as a fine, mild and early vintage. The Clare Valley had a very mild December, and a cooler January, with just enough rainfall to keep the vines healthy. Crop levels were below average, very even, and grapes were picked in excellent health. Harvest started on 8th February and was one of the earliest and most compressed in 35 years. Grapes were hand-harvested by a team of 60 workers, to ensure all the crop was picked at optimum condition.

Vines were hand-pruned, shoot-thinned and fruit-thinned where necessary. Only free run juice was used. The juice was racked off lees, then inoculated with neutral yeast to maintain focus on natural fruit characters and expression of place. Strong moderate temperature fermentation lasted about two weeks in tank. No oak was used. The wine was bottled without fining.

Tasting Notes

There are lemon juice and lime pith aromatics, a generosity of lime juice flavours, a touch of sweetness on the backpalate balanced by refreshingly powerful natural acidity. Delicate and fine.
