- Silver - International Wine Challenge 2010
Toast and lime, excellent clarity, fine balance. Dry, elegant, fruit-driven but with lots of complexity and good ageing potential.
Jeffrey Grosset is arguably Australia's greatest Riesling producer. In less good years like 2008 his wines sing with excitement as soon as they leave the vat. In great years like 2009, when the wine will have a 20-year lifespan ahead, they tend to be more closed in and reserved for a year or tow. This is strong and citrus, with a whisper of mint and anise and a prickle of spritz. Good and lean now, it will be a thrilling, scented classic in a few year's time.
Jeff Grosset is our foremost riesling maker. His wines have a crystalline purity that no one else quite matches. This is technically his number two wine, but some prefer it to his flagship Polish Hill Riesling. Both are grown in South Australia’s Clare Valley, the place where most of Australia’s best rieslings originate. This wine will get your tastebuds alert and eager for food and go beautifully with shellfish or other seafood.
February`s Wines of the Month
in 2008, Grosset’s tightly coiled Polish Hill Riesling from “hard rock” slate soils won me over hook line and sinker but, this year, it’s the pretty but precise Springvale from Watervale’s limestone and rich red soils that wins my heart. Lifted, floral and shimmering with bright, jewel-like citrus fruit, it’s clear as a bell, with lovely lemony line and length. A beauty.
Herbs and grass on the nose...A good choice for current drinking. Lemon and lime on the end.
One of Those Special Years. Valley Highs: Stelzer's Pick of 2009.
A blizzard of lemon blossom, Granny Smith apples and lime. Pristine, titghly coiled and long-lived. Edging ever closer to Polish Hill.
The long, cool growing season afforded Jeffrey Grosset the luxury of picking this wine slightly earlier than usual, a decision that he describes as ’controversial’. The finished wine dispels any uncertainty: this is a pristine, beautifully poised, green apple and lime accented Riesling with great minerality.
