BEST IN SHOW
Capezzana, Vin Santo di Carmignano 2013
Trebbiano (or Ugni Blanc) has two iterations which suggest that it is one of the world’s fine-wine varieties, though both involve transformations so dramatic as to merit the term metamorphosis. Cognac is one -- and Vin Santo the other. The glowing amber wine smells of crystallised fruits, sweet tobacco and warm attics in which fruit is stored -- appropriately enough, since that is how the grapes which make this wine are treated prior to fermentation. On the palate, it is voluptuously sweet and multi-dimensioned, the balance coming from its many aromatic allusions (more crystallised fruit and dried flowers, as well as barleysugar, ginger spice and buttered almonds) and from its subtle oxidative complexities rather than from acidity. Its glycerous texture, volume and wealth give it an easy sippability…with or without a cantucci biscuit to dip as you go.
(Available from September. Current vintage: 2012)
Charles Heidsieck, Rosé Réserve NV
The pink wave sweeping the wine world at present hasn’t left Champagne behind - but Champagne’s way with pink wine is as distinctive as the rest of its wine offer. You cannot make wines here which are vanishingly pale, petal-pretty and evanescent: there is just too much character, strike and drive on offer in Champagne’s raw materials. There are many great Champagne ripostes to the pink festival of restraint elsewhere, but this salmon-copper rose, with its cavalier autumn fruits and its sheer breadth and audacity of flavour, struck our judges as one of the most memorable. Long, bold flavours subside slowly, vinously and lingeringly in this great gastronomic rose wine.
Donnafugata, `Ben Ryé` Passito di Pantelleria 2018
Rich and waxy notes of dried orange, creme caramel, dried banana, marmalade and mango. Enticing with an explosion of ripe fruit on the palate, luscious with a vibrant balanced acidity.
Piper-Heidsieck, Vintage 2014
Superb! This has a nose of oatmeal, plum , quince and a hit of lanolin; impressive palate weight, good autolytic definition; richly resonant and long. A delight.
(Available from 2022. Current vintage: 2012)
Piper-Heidsieck, Vintage 2012
Charming nose of soft coconut, mango, nectarine and Mirabelle plum. Supremely elegant, yet with grip; voices from the orange grove; an engaging call to arms. Everything is in most excellent order.
Charles Heidsieck, Blanc de Blancs NV
A seductive toasty, ginger and Seville orange nose; plenty of character, plenty of weight and so much elegance, lift and eloquence too; fruit singing here. Lovely balance and weight; pleasing in many different ways. Stunner!
Cantine Belisario, `Cambrugiano` Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva 2017
Very fine nose, intense and concentrated with fragrant floral aromas and white peach framed by thyme and rosemary notes with white pepper touches. Fresh and lively palate with a spicy finish.
La Giuva, Amarone della Valpolicella 2016
Exceedingly inviting creamy oak, baked red fruit, fig, caramel and molasses nose. Beautiful! Good fruit concentration in the mouth with baking spice, hints of dried herbs and red berries. Very rich and concentrated with big, round tannins.Superb!
Cantina Valpantena, `Torre del Falasco` Amarone della Valpolicella 2016
Stunning fruit cake, vanilla and spice nose, touch of wood spice and red cherry. Palate brings lush dark fruits, a creamy texture, well-integrated chocolaty tannins and fresh acidity. Lovely mocha-like persistence on the finish.
(Available from mid-July. Current vintage: 2015)
Gašper, Selekcija Cabernet Franc 2019
Pronounced and expressive nose, graceful and elegant with a lovely perfume of black fruits, vanilla, tobacco and fresh lavender. Generous palate with a lovely texture and concentration. Very long finish.
(2018 vintage available from mid-July)
Inniskillin, Niagara Riesling Icewine 2019
With vibrantly viscous ripe mango, pineapple and passionfruit, he charms with precision and utter purity. Unctuous roasted fruit and rich, massive caramel notes, he's burnished and beautiful. Tantalisingly tangy and lusciously long on the finish.
(Available from August. Current vintage: 2018)
Sandeman, 40-Year-Old Tawny Port NV
Rich and vibrant with counterpoint between savoury, fruity, and sweet caramel notes. Multiple layers of Christmas cake and milk chocolate. Gloriously rich and creamy on the palate, lovely texture and freshness retained on a savoury-sweet finish.
Arras, `E.J. Carr` Late Disgorged 2006
Effortlessly complex and energetic, this is multi-faceted and revealing some age, with mushroom, beeswax and baked pastry tones allied with white chocolate, candied lemon peel and fresh apples. Incredibly long, rich and just lovely.
