Sarah Thompson, her husband Nathan and a partner purchased Lurgashall Winery in the foothills of the Blackdown Hills of West Sussex in 2012. They soon realised the potential of the surrounding ancient woodland and began using local ingredients like silver birch sap and wormwood to make small-batch spirits. We first heard about Blackdown from one of our sales team and were immediately won over when we tasted their gin. We were not the only ones that liked it, as Blackdown won gold three years running in 'The Spirit Business Gin Masters'.

With martinis on our mind, we also looked at Blackdown's Vermouth. This is the first English white Vermouth and is made by fermenting the sap of the silver birch, adding sweetness to the delicate aromas from a secret blend of herbs and spices, including wormwood and chamomile. It is then fortified with the Sussex Dry Gin to reach 14.7% ABV. The Sussex Vodka, the first vodka to be produced in Sussex, further strengthens our spirit portfolio and demonstrates the diverse offering of our English producers. It also uses silver birch to add just a touch of roundness to the pure flavour of the spirit.
