Bodegas LAN

Rioja, rioja Spain

Bodegas LAN lies in the heart of Rioja Alta and has one of the most spectacular vineyards in the region - the 72 hectare Viña Lanciano, located on a bend of the River Ebro. Protected from the winds and cold weather by the Sierra Cantabria mountain range and its close proximity to the river, the vineyard’s poor, stony soils are conducive to low yields.

The estate farms sustainably in their Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano and Garnacha vineyards. The Viña Lanciano vines have an average age of 60 years and are divided into 24 plots depending on soil, grape variety and orientation so that each can be hand-picked at perfect ripeness. In the winery, the bunches are sorted to ensure only perfect clusters make it through to the next stage. Given the high quality of the fruit coming from their vineyards, Bodegas LAN also painstakingly select and test oak barrels and have pioneered a hybrid barrel - American staves with French oak heads – which they feel creates the best ageing environment for their wines.

Founded in 1972, Bodegas LAN was named after the initials of the three provinces in the Rioja Designation of Origin: Logroño (now La Rioja), Álava and Navarra. María Barua has been the head winemaker and technical director since 2002, and brings both scientific expertise (with an academic background in chemistry in addition to her oenology degree) and local knowledge (having been born, raised and educated in Rioja). Together with her young and energetic team, María focuses not only on understanding the technical details of winemaking, but also on ‘expressing the virtues of the land’.

In addition to their Rioja Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva, we have Bodegas LAN’s ‘A Mano Edición Limitada’, which is sourced solely from 35 - 40-year-old vines planted in a single vineyard (‘pago’) called ‘El Rincón’. Aged for seven months in new French oak barriques, the wine spends a further six months in new Russian oak barrels to give it a subtle spiciness. The ‘Culmen’ (from ‘culmination’) is made from Bodegas LAN’s finest grapes, sourced from vines grown in ‘El RIncón’ that are between 45 and 60 years old, giving even greater concentration. The wine is aged for 24 months in new French oak barrels, followed by a further 20 months in bottle. Powerful yet fleshy, it shows ripe red fruits and blackberries, with hints of balsamic, woodsmoke and spice.

The unique ‘D-12’ is named after ‘DEPOSIT 12’, one of the tanks in the winery that has gained a reputation for producing particularly great wines year after year. It is a blend of 98% Tempranillo and 2% Mazuelo from Haro (Rioja Alta) and Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa). It spends 12 months in new American and French oak barrels, followed by a further 12 months in bottle prior to release. Silky on the finish, it has aromas of red fruits and liquorice, with cocoa and a hint of violet.
