The Burgáns Albariño is made by winemakers Luciano Amoedo and Katia Álvarez at the Martín Códax winery in Galicia. Burgáns is the name of the hill on which the Martin Codax  winery sits. There are 450 hectares of vineyard planted to Albariño, which represents 13% of the total Rías Baixas DO. This is a co-operative winery which was founded in 1986 by a group of winemakers led by ninth generation winemaker Luciano Amoedo and currently comprises 2,400 tiny vineyard parcels individually managed by 550 families. Martín Códax was instrumental in the creation of the Rías Baixas DO in 1988 – in fact the statutes were signed at the winery – and are estate-grown Albariño specialists, conducting ongoing research into the variety.
