Ca' Marcanda

Tuscany, tuscany Italy

This fine property, purchased by Angelo Gaja in 1996, now has 120 hectares of vineyard and a superb winery that combines simplicity, efficiency and architectural brilliance.

While Gaja has shown with ‘Darmagi’ that he can make great Cabernet Sauvignon in the Langhe, he was compelled to try to compete with some of the great names of Italian wine when he arrived in Bolgheri just over 20 years ago. The winery and its vineyards are situated just south of Poggio al Tesoro and Ornellaia.

Their ‘business card’, as they say in Italy, is ‘Magari’, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. It is soft, forward and juicy. Their flagship wine is ‘Camarcanda’. While early vintages had as much as 50% Merlot in the blend, more recent vintages are made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Cabernet Franc, with Merlot relegated to other blends. The 2016 ‘Camarcanda’ is intense and savoury – a distinctive take on Bolgheri and its varied expressions of Cabernet. As at Poggio al Tesoro, where the 2016 ‘Sondraia’ is startlingly good, the wines at Ca’ Marcanda have now shrugged off the earlier timorous character they displayed towards tannin and structure, and the wines are much the better for it.
