Capezzana

Tuscany, tuscany Italy

Capezzana, situated in the Carmignano zone to the west of Florence, is owned and run by the Contini Bonacossi family, the latest in a long line of owners. In fact, in the archives in Florence they discovered a contract for the rent of vines and olive groves at Capezzana signed in 804.

Today, the responsibility for ensuring the continuation of such longevity now lies with the third generation of the Contini Bonacossi family, with Benedetta Contini Bonacossi looking after the winery. Franco Bernabei is their consultant winemaker, and his presence is evident in the big step up in quality we've seen since 2013.

The estate has 90 hectares of vineyard and 30,000 olive trees, all of which are cultivated organically (the wines are certified organic from the 2015 vintage onwards). The balance in the vineyard is now being preserved in the wines. As a result, the reds all display supple and silky tannins combined with luminous fruit. The 'Ugo Contini Bonacossi' is named after the family's late patriarch who was a great advocate and ambassador of Carmignano DOC. The wine is a 100% Sangiovese from the Viticciana vineyard, a site selected by Ugo himself. At an altitude of 150 metres and south-west facing, the vines grow on a limestone and schistous soil. The resulting wine is concentrated and elegant with silky tannins and a long, spicy finish. It is exciting to see this ancient estate being revitalised by its current guardians.
