Château de Fontenille

Bordeaux, bordeaux France

Vines have been grown at Château de Fontenille since the 13th century and a pilgrimage route, protected by UNESCO, runs through the vineyards to the neighbouring Abbaye de la Sauve Majeure, whose monks tended the vines for hundreds of years. Stéphane Defraine bought the property in 1989 and has gradually renovated the estate. As the president of the local Syndicat, Stéphane's passion for the Entre-Deux-Mers region is clear.

Stéphane Defraine now owns 49 hectares of vines in total, of which 17 hectares are planted with white varieties and 32 with red. Situated at an altitude of 110 metres above sea level, between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, the vineyard's free-draining, gravelly clay soils, as well as the high winds, ensure healthy, balanced grapes packed with flavour at harvest.

The average age of the vines used for Fontenille's Bordeaux Rouge is 20 years. It is a classic Bordeaux blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and is aged 50% in oak and 50% in tank. The unoaked Entre-Deux-Mers Blanc, from 17-year-old vines on average, is a blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Sauvignon Gris, 20% Semillon and 20% Muscadelle. It underwent some lees ageing to add softness and richness to the wine.

Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux is the appellation title for Côtes de Bordeaux red wines made specifically in the area around Cadillac, at the southern end of the Entre-Deux-Mers district of Bordeaux. The wines present excellent value for money. Château Fontenille Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, grown on south and south-east facing slopes and benefiting from maximum sunlight exposure. It ages in new oak barrels for 18 months before bottling, giving the wine a lovely rounded texture and notes of sweet spice and cinnamon.
