Colonia Las Liebres

Mendoza, mendoza Argentina

Colonia Las Liebres is made by Alberto Antonini at his Altos Las Hormigas winery in Luján de Cuyo. Alberto refers to Bonarda as Argentina's 'other native grape variety', being convinced that its potential in Mendoza is higher than anywhere in the world, including its home in Italy. Alberto's aim is to establish Colonia Las Liebres as the standard bearer for Bonarda in the same way that Altos Las Hormigas flies the flag for Malbec. The fruit is sourced from vineyards located in Colonia Los Amigos, Ugarteche in Luján de Cuyo and Santa Rosa. Bonarda's delicate skins require protection from sunburn as well as good ventilation to avoid botrytis, and therefore rigorous canopy management is essential. The high-trellised vines filter the sun's rays, keep the plant vigour in check and provide the required space around the clusters. Eschewing the use of oak, Alberto captures the elegance, succulent fruit and freshness of the variety to create a charming and highly drinkable wine.
