Domaine Barge

Since 1860, seven generations of the Barge family have been making wine in Ampuis. The first bottled wine appeared in 1929. The domaine is now run by Julien, who has taken over from his father, Gilles.

They have a total of seven hectares in the Côte Rôtie, with three hectares of the lieu dit ‘Le Combard’ being their latest addition in 2000. After rebuilding the stone terraces, replanting the vines and installing a monorail due to the steepness of the vineyard, the first vintage was released in 2007. Their other single vineyard, ‘Côte Brune’, purchased in 1954, can been seen from their modern winery. The vines range from 40-60 years old.

The steep vineyards mean all of the grapes are hand harvested. Their Côte Rôtie contains a little Viognier, with 8% in ‘Le Combard’ and 5% in ‘Côte Brune’. Fermentation takes place in small, temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in 600 litre oak barrels for 24 months before going to bottle.

‘Le Combard’ is ready to drink now. It is wonderfully fragrant with red fruits and silky tannins, while ‘Côte Brune’ is more structured with black fruits and the classic pepper and spice of the best Côte Rôtie. While delicious now, it will reward with a little more time in bottle.
