Domaine Stéphane Aladame

Burgundy, burgundy France

Stéphane Aladame’s organic estate in Montagny is one of the stars of the Côte Chalonnaise. Stéphane began from scratch in 1992, at the age of 18 and has since earned an outstanding reputation thanks to his commitment, almost exclusively, to Premier Cru vineyards. Today, his bottles grace the tables of Michelin-starred restaurants throughout France and abroad. The appellation owes a great deal to Stéphane, who is a driving force in an area with superb potential but which is oft-overlooked. The wines of Montagny can easily rival those from the more famous Côte de Beaune, which lies immediately to the north, and often at considerably better prices.

Stéphane’s eight hectares are all farmed organically and harvested by hand, unlike the majority of Montagny’s vineyards which are dominated by cooperatives. Stéphane vinifies each vineyard separately in a small cellar under his house. The wines all display a serious, crystalline precision and unmistakeable vibrancy, which Stéphane attributes to the high limestone content and shallow soils in Montagny; in effect much closer in profile to Chablis than to the Côte d’Or.

The Montagny Premier Cru ‘Découverte’ comes from two parcels: ‘Les Maroques’ and ‘Les Gouresses’ and is unoaked to preserve its primary fruit character. The ‘sélection Vieilles Vignes’ is a blend of grapes sourced from four Premier Cru parcels (Les Platières, Les Gouresses, Les Las, Les Creux de Beaux Champs) of 40 to 80-year-old vines. Fermented and aged for 12 months in 100% French oak, with 25% of the barrels new, this wine has well-integrated oak flavours, good tension and a racy acidity which lifts the finish. ‘Les Maroques’ Premier Cru is a 3.5 hectare vineyard planted at 300 to 330 metres altitude. The clay-limestone soils produce wines with marked minerality and refined hints of fresh white peach, together with floral and citrus notes. ‘Les Burnins’ Premier Cru is a tiny 0.3 hectare site at 300 metres with exceptional 96-year-old south-facing vines. The wine reveals an extremely concentrated and floral nose, with hints of honeysuckle, crisp acidity and a beautifully detailed finish.

The Crémant de Bourgogne Extra Brut is a blend of Chardonnay and Aligoté. It is aged on its lees for 12 – 18 months and has a dosage of 3g/l, resulting in a wine that is refreshingly dry.
