Etienne Sauzet

Burgundy, burgundy France

Domaine Etienne Sauzet, located in the village of Puligny-Montrachet, is arguably one of Puligny’s finest domaines. Established in the 1920s, at its height the domaine had 12 hectares under vine. Etienne’s daughter inherited the vineyards and left them to her three children so consequently the vineyard holdings today total less than nine hectares. Until recently Jeanine, Etienne’s granddaughter, and her husband Gérard Boudot, ran the domaine. Today, the next generation has taken over with Emilie, Jeanine’s daughter, and Benoît Riffault, her winemaker husband, running the domaine. Etienne Sauzet purchases grapes from family and trusted growers and has been practicing biodynamic viticulture since 2008. The portion of new oak in the cellar has also been reduced in recent years to allow the elegance of the fruit to shine through.

Benoît’s immaculate winemaking shines through in his wines, which are all about minerality, precision and exceptional length. The Bourgogne ‘La Tuféra’ punches far above its AOC with bright fruit intensity, aromas of white flowers and lovely acidity. It is sourced from vines with an average age of 50 years in Puligny-Montrachet. We are delighted to add the Hautes Côtes de Beaune ‘Jardin du Calvaire’ to the list this year. The biodynamically cultivated vineyard is planted at an altitude of 450 metres, at the end of a steep path called ‘la route du Calvaire’ (the Calvary route, an indication of its steepness) which is planted with vines owned by Benoît and Emilie. Exclusive to Liberty, it is the first vintage introduced to the UK.
