Heirloom Vineyards, says Zar Brooks, was conceived in the 2000 vintage “when a young winemaking student caught the eye of a silly old wine judge.” Zar is still silly, and the young winemaking student is now his wife, Elena, and she is winning plenty of awards for her Dandelion and Heirloom wines.

Heirloom is made from a selection of their best fruit. “Our aim,” says Zar, “is to preserve the best of tradition (the old world of wine and our unique old vineyards) and to champion the best clones of each variety planted in the most appropriate sites, embracing the principles of organic and biodynamic farming.” Their Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir is ripe and scented with supple tannins. The Barossa Shiraz is intense and ripe yet nicely defined, while the ‘A'Lambra’ Eden Valley Reserve Shiraz is bursting with lifted berry fruit and a spicy richness.
