Jane Eyre

Victoria, victoria Australia

Jane first made wines under this label in Australia in 2012, when she made three barrels of a Pinot Noir from Mornington. In 2015, she finally had enough wine to export, so we jumped at what she had to offer.

We have had great success with her wines from Burgundy since they arrived at the beginning of 2016. Their restraint and elegance chimes with the style of wine we are looking for. Australian journalist Nick Stock has said of Jane that she “is a thoughtful and determined winemaker, with clear ideas about the style of Pinot Noir she likes. She prizes fragrance and delicacy over artefact and ripeness.”

As in Burgundy, Jane buys the grapes for these wines. The Gippsland fruit is from an organically-farmed vineyard planted in 1998 on red, volcanic loam soils. The fruit was hand harvested, sorted at the winery and 100% de-stemmed. It was fermented in an open-topped stainless steel tank and spent three weeks on skins. In order to retain delicacy, she only did ‘several light punch-downs’ during the time on skins. The wine was then aged for 10 months in used French oak barrels.

The fruit for the Mornington Peninsula wine came from two vineyards in Merricks. The average age of the vines is 30 years. She retained 20% whole bunches and vinified the wine in an open-topped wooden fermenter. Once again, it spent three weeks on skins, with several light punch-downs, and was aged for 10 months in used French oak barrels.

Neither wine was fined or filtered prior to bottling. The Mornington wine is more open with a lovely aroma of cherries and orange zest, while the Gippsland wine is more reserved, with darker fruit aromas and nicely textured tannins.

In 2018, Jane secured some fruit from the ‘Thousand Candles’ farm in the Yarra Valley. The site is located 65 kilometres northeast of Melbourne and is famed for the quality of Pinot Noir which grows there. She used 10% whole-bunch and gentle extraction techniques in order to produce a wine which is elegant and poised, with beautiful perfumes of red fruit and violets. We simply couldn’t resist adding it to our list.
