Over a third of Italy’s organic vineyards are found in Sicily. The hot climate and breezy conditions mean that disease pressure in the vineyards is low – one of the reasons why many Sicilian growers have embraced organic practices.

In the hills around Menfi, there are close to 1,000 hectares of organic vineyards, offering a range of choice to select the best parcels to use as the base for the Jummare wines.

The best organic Nero d’Avola and Vermentino grapes are harvested and taken to the local co-operative for crushing and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. After a short period in tank, the wines are blended and bottled in the spring to preserve the pure varietal character of the wines. The Vermentino boasts bright citrus fruit aromas, herbal nuances and a refreshing acidity, while the Nero d’Avola has a brooding dark fruit intensity with silky tannins.
