Morgadio da Torre

Vinho Verde, vinho verde Portugal

As Morgadio da Torre illustrates, the Alvarinho grape produces wines in northern Portugal that are every bit as exciting as those produced in Galicia (where it is known as Albariño). The grapes for this wine are grown at the Quinta da Torre in Monção, located in the north-eastern part of the Vinho Verde DOC and generally regarded as its best sub-region for Alvarinho. The vineyards are furthest from the Atlantic, resulting in hotter summers and giving wines with greater weight than is found in the rest of the DO. Even then, this wine is only 12.5% alcohol.

Established in 1603, the Quinta da Torre is now owned by Mafalda da Cunha Guedes and her siblings. Winemaker Antonio Braga is scrupulous in his handling of the fruit. It is gently pressed and fermented at low temperatures to preserve the aromatics of the grape. Following fermentation, it is aged on lees for five months to give it extra weight and texture. This texture, cut by a lovely acidity that lifts the white pear aromatics, makes this unoaked wine a delicious drink.
