Pieve Santa Restituta

Nestled in the heart of Montalcino, this 27 hectare property sits at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level, neighbouring Fossacolle and Case Basse. It was purchased by Angelo Gaja in 1994 – his first foray outside his native Langhe. It took Gaja a while to bring the wines up to the level of quality he consistently achieves with his Piemontese wines, but today his Brunellos from Pieve Santa Restituta rank with the finest in Montalcino.

As in the Langhe, he has moved to a long post-fermentation maceration (about 30 days) and a mix of ageing in barrique and larger botti. Of the two single-vineyard wines, the ‘Sugarille’ epitomises the power and intensity that gives Brunello di Montalcino its enduring appeal, while the ‘Rennina’ is more elegant, restrained and, arguably, Piemontese.
