Quinta do Infantado

Douro, douro Portugal

Quinta do Infantado has been owned by the Roseira family for well over a century. In 1979, it became the first Port producer to start bottling its wines on the estate in the Douro, rather than in Vila Nova de Gaia. The name ‘Infantado‘ derives from ‘Infante‘ (the Portuguese for ‘heir to the throne’) and it was the Portuguese royal family who first built the winery in 1816, as a place where they could collect taxes in the form of grapes and wine brought to them by the local growers. João Roseira now looks after the vineyards and oversees the winemaking.

The 46-hectare estate is located in the Covas do Douro area of the Cima Corgo, on the north bank of the Douro River and 4 kilometres downstream from Pinhão. All the vineyards are classified A-grade due to their prime location and they range in altitude from 150 to 350 metres above sea level. The grapes used for the Infantado Ports come from a range of old-vine vineyard parcels up to 100 years of age. These produce very small yields of extremely concentrated grapes, ideal for the production of Port. The grapes for the Douro Tinto come from some the highest vineyard plots at the top of the slopes. Since 2010, the grapes have been trodden in robotic lagares.

Infantado offers a range of medium-dry style Ports, from the concentrated Unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage, through to the rich and balanced Vintage Port and the deliciously nutty 10-Year-Old Tawny. The White Port is a blend of Gouveio, Rabigato, Viosinho and Moscatel Galego, it is fresh and full of citrus fruit flavours, with a well-balanced sweetness. The Infantado Douro Tinto blends Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca and offers superb value, with juicy black fruit flavours, ripe and round tannins and a lingering finish.
