Samalens

Armagnac, armagnac France

Founded in 1882 by Jean Samalens, Samalens is situated in Laujuzan in the heart of the 'Bas-Armagnac' region, where the best Armagnacs are produced. They are the largest Armagnac producer in this area and have eight stills in their distillery, the oldest of which dates back to the 19th century. Samalens' cellars boast some of the most significant and exclusive stocks of Bas-Armagnac and the oldest of their aged reserves dates back to the 1888 vintage.

The wines are sourced exclusively from the best sites in the region, particularly from the small area known as Grand-Bas-Armagnac. The topsoil here is composed of 'boulbène', an alluvial sandy deposit left by an ancient seabed which adds delicacy and complexity to the Armagnacs.

Samalens source the wood for their new barrels from the local forests in Gascony. The wood is carefully aged at the estate for four to five years before being turned into the best possible barrels in which to age their Armagnacs.

We have selected an eight-year-old Armagnac made from 100% Ugni Blanc and a 1995 Vintage Armagnac. The eight-year-old 'Single de Samalens' is for early drinking and displays purity and finesse similar to Léopold Gourmel's Cognacs. The 1995 vintage Armagnac, complex and layered, was awarded the 'Prix du Président de la République' top prize at the 53rd Talents de l'Armagnac competition.
