Taittinger

Champagne, champagne France

This family-owned house is currently run by Vitalie Taittinger who has recently taken over as president of the company from her father, Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger. The estate was founded in 1734, although the Taittinger family acquired the property in 1931.

Their vineyards cover some of the prime sites in the Vallée de la Marne, Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs, but their headquarters are in Reims. Here, their offices sit above the ancient chalk cellars that were originally dug by Romans in the 4th century, before passing to the monks of the Saint Nicaise Abbey and later to the Taittinger family.

Taittinger benefit from a considerable vineyard holding of 288 hectares, giving them excellent control over the quality of their grapes. This includes a high proportion of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, which accounts for the very elegant style of this variety. Taittinger's total split of plantings comprises around 37% Chardonnay and 48% Pinot Noir, the remainder being made up of Meunier.

The Brut Réserve is a blend of 40% Chardonnay with 60% Pinot Noir and Meunier from 35 different vineyards and vintages, aged for three years in their cellars before release. Their NV Prestige Rosé is a blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 25% Meunier, with three years ageing on the lees. A dry finish and delicate salmon pink colour highlight the elegance of the wine and the quality of the blend. The Brut Millésimé is made only from first-press juice in the years when the grape harvest is of an outstanding quality. It consists of a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir from selected villages classified as Grand Crus and Premiers Crus. The two vintages that we have available have been aged for five years, to ensure that the wine has the perfect balance of complexity and freshness. The Comtes de Champagne is a Prestige Cuvée Blanc de Blancs made exclusively with grapes from the Côte des Blancs, an appellation characterised by its chalk-covered ridge that produces exceptionally fine Chardonnay.
