Herdade do Peso’s sustainably-farmed vineyard is located in Pedrogão within the Vidígueira commune, where the climate is warm and sunny with little rainfall. The property includes a dam, which occupies 20 hectares and provides much-needed water to irrigate the vineyard. The soils here are mainly limestone. After ripening assessments, the grapes were harvested separately at their optimum point of aromatic and acidic ripeness.

2015 started with heavy rain, although winter was generally dry and cold. Spring was drier than in previous years, with some occasional rain, which allowed for favourable development of the vines. The summer was hot and dry, the typical cool nights of the Vidígueira region arriving unseasonably late, which necessitated a meticulous selection process at harvest to ensure the fruit was picked at the desired ripeness.

After total destemming, the berries were hand selected before being soft crushed. Cold soaking then took place at 10ºC for three days before fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28ºC for around nine days. After malolactic fermentation, the wines of each grape variety were transferred separately into French oak barrels of different ages and from different cooperages, where they matured for around 12 months. The final blend was decided after numerous tastings to ensure that only the best barrels were selected. After bottling the wine underwent a period of bottle ageing at a controlled temperature of 15ºC prior to release.

This 160-hectare property has been owned by the Guedes family since 1996. It is situated in the southern part of the Alentejo, on the limestone soils of Vidígueira. As this is the warmest part of the region, it has 152 hectares of red varieties (Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, Periquita, Moreto and Touriga Nacional) and only eight hectares of white grapes (Antão Vaz and Arinto). Winemaker Luís Cabral de Almeida makes fruit-expressive wines that reflect the warmer climate of Vidígueira.
