In 1998, Alison and Joaquim Luiz Gomes bought the Azamor estate in the Alentejo and planted their first vineyard in 2001. Known as the ‘breadbasket’ of Portugal, the Alentejo has staked a claim as one of the country’s most important red wine regions and is renowned for producing fruit-driven wines of consistent quality and excellent value.
Situated relatively far south, the Alentejo is known for its dry, hot summers, with temperatures often rising to 45°C. Azamor’s 27-hectare estate is moderated by cooler temperatures in their vineyards planted 350 metres above sea level. Planted on low vigour, clay, and schist slopes, these are some of the most densely planted vineyards in the region and produce low yields of very concentrated fruit. The resulting wines have great elegance, concentration, and depth of flavour.
Azamor use a combination of indigenous Portuguese varieties (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Trincadeira) and international varieties (Syrah, Alicante Bouschet, Petit Verdot and Merlot) in the Vinho Regional Alentejano blend to produce a bold yet refined red, packed with juicy fruit and ripe tannins. The 100% Petit Verdot is well structured with intense black fruit flavours and a subtle smoky character from 12 months of ageing in French oak, 35% of which is new. Made using grapes from the best plots on the vineyard, the ‘Selected Vines’ is an intriguing blend of Syrah, Touriga Franca and Alicante Bouchet, aged for 12 months in a mixture of French and American oak. This is a stunning wine from the Alentejo, with vibrant fruit and velvety tannins.
Vineyards
The Alentejo is known for its dry, hot summers, when the temperature can often rise to 45°C. However, Azamor’s vineyard benefit from the cooling influence of altitude. The 27 hectares of vineyards are situated at 350 metres above sea level and are single cordon trained. They are densely planted and grow on clay soils with a bedrock of schist, 1 to 2 metres deep.
Vintage
The 2022 vintage was marked by a mild winter followed by a very dry and warm spring. The end of July saw very high temperatures of up to 46°C, which cooled to an average of 35°C for the remainder of summer. Harvest began on the 22nd August and concluded on 10th September, thankfully avoiding heavy rainfall which began on the 13th September. The harvested fruit displayed a wonderful concentration and was very well-balanced.
Vinification
Upon arrival at the winery, each variety was transferred into separate stainless steel tanks and macerated on the skins. Fermentation took place over nine days at controlled temperatures between 22°C-24°C. The wine was then aged for seven months: 20% in used French and American oak barrels and the remainder in stainless steel, prior to blending and bottling in September 2025.
Tasting Notes & Technical Details
This wine has a vibrant colour and delicate violet aromas balanced with herbal aromas of mint and sage. On the palate, the wine presents red plums and black cherries, with a touch of black pepper and lifted aromas from the French oak.
