Cantine Belisario is a 300-hectare cooperative winery in the Matelica DOC, Marche, where the only permitted grape is Verdicchio. The co-op boasts 24 organically farmed vineyards, inland from the Castelli di Jesi DOC, where the climate is more continental. Here, the combination of warm days and cool nights extends the growing season, allowing the grape's aromatics to develop. As a result, harvest occurs as late as the second half of October. These vines are the source of Cantine Belisario’s organic ‘Vigneti B’ Verdicchio.

Grapes for their ‘Terre di Valbona’ are planted in vineyards between 350 and 450 metres above sea level. The single vineyard ‘Vigneti del Cerro’ Verdicchio is sourced from vines planted 360 metres above sea level, creating an extra level of richness and depth on the palate. Their Riserva, ‘Cambrugiano’, is fragrant with lovely depth and texture, highlighting Verdicchio’s potential to create complex white wines. The Rosso Conero DOC, made solely from Montepulciano, is full and ripe, while the Lacrima di Morro d’Alba has a lovely floral character.

Vineyards

The co-operative has 300 hectares of vineyards, 24 of which are organically cultivated. The grapes for the Terre di Valbona are sourced from the hillside vineyards situated in the valley of Valbona, 350-450 metres above sea level. The vines are south-facing and Guyot trained.

Vintage

The 2024 vintage saw an increase in yields compared to 2023 due to the lack of downy mildew. The summer months saw good temperatures and a small amount of rain, resulting in a harvest of excellent quality.

Vinification

Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were destemmed, softly pressed and clarified before undergoing fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 14-15°C for roughly two weeks. The juice was then aged in stainless steel vats for four months before bottling. The Terre di Valbona is unoaked to maximise freshness.

Tasting Notes & Technical Details

This wine is pale lemon in colour with a lovely aromatic and clean bouquet of acacia with a touch of honey. Surprisingly full-bodied, it shows great balance between its crisp green apple character and the richer honey and lemon flavours. The finish is dry and vibrant.
