Based in Yecla, Murcia, Familia Castaño is known for its huge efforts to promote one of Spain’s native varieties: Monastrell. Familia Castaño embodies the best of what southern Spain has to offer, producing rich, warm-climate wines, with almost Syrah-like complexity, which overdeliver in terms of value year after year. Castaño began bottling characterful, single-variety Monastrell in the 1980s when the variety was used exclusively for bulk wines and blending. Today, in the expert hands of Daniel Castaño and his family, the variety maintains high quality even at moderate to generous yields. 80% of the family’s 600 hectares of vineyards are dedicated to Monastrell, with smaller plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Macabeo and Chardonnay among others. The Monastrell is sourced from dry-farmed, bush and trellised vines, up to 70 years old, in the ‘Las Gruesas’ and ‘Pozuelo’ vineyards. Totalling 336 hectares, the two vineyards sit at an elevation of 750 metres, with a north-south aspect, on sandy limestone soils.

The 100% Monastrell ‘Hécula’ represents exceptional value for money. Certified organic it displays succulent ripe black fruit, notes of sweet spice and liquorice and supple ripe tannins. The ‘Colección’, made from 70% old-vine Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, shows more red cherry and dried fruit, with hints of smokiness and chocolate. The Organic Macabeo, Monastrell Rosado and Monastrell are some of Spain’s best value organic wines and are now available in sustainable five-litre ‘Bag in Box’. Made for early drinking, they are fresh and elegant thanks to the vineyard’s elevation of 500-700 metres. The ‘Dulce’ is delicious, full of dried fig, raisin and plum jam flavours, with a rounded mouthfeel and balanced acidity that keeps the finish fresh.

Vineyards

The grapes are grown on dry-farmed bush and trellis vines in the Las Gruesas and Pozuelo vineyards. Soils here are limestone with strips of clay and sandy soil. The altitude of both vineyards is 750 metres above sea level and the vines have a North-South orientation. The Monastrell and Garnacha Tinto has an average vine age of over 80 years while the Cabernet Sauvignon comes from 40 year old vines.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage was one of the driest on record, with early April rains providing vital soil moisture before a return to dry conditions and high temperatures. An intensely arid summer, with some localised hail, led to significantly reduced yields, but the absence of humidity ensured excellent grape health. Despite the challenging conditions, the fruit was highly concentrated and of outstanding quality.

Vinification

Each variety, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tintorera, was harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and transport in 15-kilogram cases to protect fruit integrity. On arrival at the winery, the best bunches were rigorously selected on sorting tables before gentle destemming, without crushing, using a small-capacity destemmer. Fermentation took place in small 8,000- and 10,000-litre stainless steel vats, with hand-performed pump-overs to ensure gentle extraction. Temperature-controlled fermentation at 24–28 degrees celsius was carried out using indigenous yeasts, followed by around eight days of skin maceration to build colour and tannin structure. The wine was then softly pressed using a pneumatic press before ageing in a combination of French and American oak barrels, blending traditional winemaking techniques with precise temperature control to preserve the distinct character of each variety.

Tasting Notes & Technical Details

This wine is deep ruby red in colour. It is a complex and sophisticated wine, brimming with aromas of plum, raspberry and cranberries. Full-bodied and intense on the palate with a delicate minerality and well-integrated oak. Silky tannins and plum fruit lead to a long finish.
