Corte Giara is the negociant label of famed Valpolicella producer Allegrini. The wines are made by Allegrini using fruit sourced from outside of their estate vineyards. They have a similar stamp of quality that sets them apart from most of the Veronese wines produced at this level.

As you might expect from Allegrini, the Valpolicella Ripasso and Amarone offer outstanding typicity and quality. The Pinot Grigio is more classic than the Alpha Zeta example but similarly appealing.

Vineyards

The vineyards are situated in the eastern, morainic hills of Lake Garda with an elevation of 200-250 metres above sea level. These vines are planted with a south/south-west exposure on stony, well drained soils. They are trained with Guyot system, with a plant density of 3,000 vines per hectare. The average age of the vines is 29 years. All this means the fruit produced is concentrated with good depth of varietal character.

Vintage

The 2022 winter was, like most of Europe, cold and dry. The lack of rainfall during the winter and a rise in temperatures at the beginning of the spring, meant an early start of the growing season, almost 20 days before average. The spring was followed by a vicious heatwave so a good canopy management and effective emergency irrigation systems in the vineyards, were fundamental to survive the heat. Despite the efforts, some fruit was inevitably lost due to below average yields. but the fruit still showed a great fruit concentration.

Vinification

The grapes were harvested at the beginning of September. The grapes were whole bunch pressed and the must was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at 14-15°C for eight to ten days. Partial malolactic fermentation took place in October. The wine spent four months in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, and a further two months ageing in bottle.

Tasting Notes & Technical Details

This wine is bright straw yellow in colour. On the nose, there are aromas of pear accompanied by wildflowers and a subtle, delicate smoky nuance. The palate is dry, with a good grip and a satisfying, fine mouthfeel.
