Producer
For five generations, the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel have produced quality wines in the Southern Rhône. They have always taken a vineyard-led approach, championing classic and lesser-known appellations while utilising organic practices to express a distinct sense of place in their wines. This has earned them a reputation as one of the region’s most respected producers.
For the Luberon Rosé and Luberon Blanc, the Perrin family work closely with their growers to achieve optimal freshness. The fruit is sourced from the Parc Régional de Luberon, situated in the south-east of the Rhône Valley. Here, a combination of cooler climate, an elevation of 300 metres and limestone marl soil gives the wines a lively acidity. The Luberon Rosé blends Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Vermentino, offering a subtle floral and red-fruit character. The Luberon Blanc is a blend of Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, Ugni Blanc and Roussanne and has vibrant citrus notes complemented by a mineral finish.
The Ventoux Rouge hails from the slopes of Mount Ventoux, where high elevations again provide key freshness to this blend of Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah. The finished wine is fragrant with juicy red fruit, balanced by soft, ripe tannins.
The Perrin family manage the vineyards for both of their Côtes-du-Rhône wines. The Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc is sourced from the clay-limestone soils of Cairanne and Jonquières, which provide the wine with a mineral freshness. The blend comprises Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier, vinified in stainless steel. The red blends Grenache and Syrah from the cooler climate of Vinsobres, supplemented with Mourvèdre from Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Saint-Maurice. Characterised by notes of redcurrant fruit and black pepper, the wine is aged in both stainless steel and oak barrels for 12 months to lend it extra weight.
Only 20% of the Côtes-du-Rhône region is permitted to add the word ‘Villages’, which signifies the best vineyard sites within the region. The Côtes-du-Rhône Villages uses the same viticulture and vinification techniques employed at Château de Beaucastel. Made from Grenache and Syrah, planted on stony terraces over clay and limestone, it is a poised wine which typifies the very best of this region. Maturation is equally split between stainless steel, oak foudres and oak barrels for 12 months. This wine delivers excellent value and is characterised by notes of pure redcurrant fruit and Provençal herbs balanced by ripe and sleek tannins.
Famille Perrin ‘Signature’
The Perrin family began farming organically at Château de Beaucastel in 1950 and strongly believe it helps express a sense of place in the finished wine. Their ‘Signature’ range embraces this philosophy, offering organic wines sourced from the family’s certified vineyards across the Côtes-du-Rhône region.
The Côtes-du-Rhône Rosé Signature, made from a blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah and Cinsault, is delicate and fragrant with pure red fruit. It is sourced from the 10-hectare ‘Grand Prébois’ vineyard in Orange. The Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc Signature comes from further north, close to the village of Vinsobres, where the soil is a mix of gravel and clay. The blend of Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne offers an appealing bright stone fruit character and white pepper spice. Both wines are aged in stainless steel to preserve the freshness and aromatic qualities of these grape varieties. The Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge Signature is a blend of Grenache and Syrah sourced from vineyards north of Orange, where the chalk and clay soil lend depth and purity of fruit to the wine. It is aged for 12 months, mainly in stainless steel, with 25% of the blend aged in used oak barrels.
Vineyards
The fruit for the Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc Nature is sourced from certified organic vineyards situated close to the village of Vinsobres, in the north of the Southern Rhone. Here the vineyards are relatively cooler and at a higher altitude, resulting in excellent freshness. The soil is a mix of gravel, clay and limestone.
Vintage
Despite climatic challenges throughout the year requiring constant vigilance and considerable vineyard work, the 2024 vintage demonstrates exceptional promise. The harvest commenced on August 2nd and concluded on October 3rd, with each vineyard block harvested at perfect maturity to achieve grapes that were both balanced and expressive. Though the vineyard work proved demanding, the intensive efforts invested are expected to yield wines of superior quality. Initial tastings reveal wines displaying excellent balance, combining vibrant fruitiness with tension and finesse. The wines achieve optimal phenolic maturity supported by good acidity, revealing remarkable freshness and beautiful structure.
Vinification
The grapes were harvested early in the morning to preserve their freshness. After pressing, the juices were cold settled in order to attain clarity. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures of 16°C for 15 days. The wine was then racked and remained in stainless-steel tanks until bottling to retain its vibrant primary fruit aromatics.
