Zar and Elena Brooks, of Dandelion Vineyards fame, founded Heirloom Vineyards in order to make wines from a selection of their best fruit.

“Our aim,” says Zar, “is to preserve the best of tradition (the old world of wine and our unique old vineyards) and to champion the best clones of each variety planted in the most appropriate sites, embracing the principles of organic and biodynamic farming.”

The Barossa Shiraz is intense and ripe yet nicely defined. The Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir, made with 50% whole bunch, has bright, crunchy red fruit flavours and supple tannins. It offers excellent value. Richard Hemming MW agrees, stating, “I defy anyone to find better-value Pinot Noir than Heirloom in the Adelaide Hills.”

Vineyards

The Pinot Noir grapes are sourced from Heirloom Vineyards' best sites in the Adelaide Hills, in Charleston and Macclesfield. Heirloom use their own Pinot Noir clones and handtend their vines meticulously throughout the growing season.

Vintage

The 2024 vintage has been cool, with average degree-day summations up to the end of March. February and March were completely devoid of rain. Accelerated by the low crops and a warm March, the harvest was completed in perfect autumn weather in mid-March, exactly one month earlier than the very cool 2023 harvest.

Vinification

The grapes were harvested by hand and then underwent meticulous sorting bunch by bunch at the winery. Fermentation took place naturally in open top tanks before racking to a basket press. The wine was aged in second and third use French oak barriques for a few months.

Tasting Notes & Technical Details

Vibrant ruby in colour, this wine opens with aromas of raspberry and redcurrant with nuances of mint and forest floor. The palate shows flavours of black cherry and plum, alongside well-integrated notes of cedar and pepper from the time in oak. This is complemented by a fresh natural acidity, fine tannins and a lingering finish.
