Jane Eyre first made wines under her own, eponymous label in Australia in 2012, making three barrels of a Pinot Noir from the Mornington Peninsula. At that time, she was already making exceptional wines in Burgundy as a micro-negociant and now splits her year, making wine in both hemispheres. Australian journalist Nick Stock accurately describes Jane as “a thoughtful and determined winemaker, with clear ideas about the style of Pinot Noir she likes. She prizes fragrance and delicacy over artefact and ripeness.”

As in Burgundy, Jane buys the grapes for her Australian wines. The Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir hails from two vineyards in Merricks, with an average age of 30 years. The wine is vinified using 20 – 25% whole bunches in an open-topped wooden fermenter and spends three weeks on the skins, with several light punch downs. Jane then ages the wine for 10 months in used French oak barrels before bottling it without fining or filtration. The resulting expression is open and inviting, with lovely aromas of cherries and orange zest.

Since 2018, Jane has been buying exceptional fruit from the ‘Thousand Candles’ farm in the Yarra Valley. The site, 65 kilometres northeast of Melbourne, is famed for the quality of the Pinot Noir which grows there. She uses 20% whole bunch and gentle extraction to produce a wine which is elegant and poised, defined by beautiful perfumes of red fruit and violets.

Fruit for the Tasmania Pinot Noir is sourced from two vineyards on Tasmania's northern coast. Two-thirds come from the iron-rich soils of Tamar Valley, and the final third is sourced from Pipers River, Tasmania’s northernmost wine region. It has beautifully pure red fruit, a touch of spice and a delicious freshness throughout.

Vineyards

The Pinot Noir grapes for this wine are grown from two vineyards on Tasmania's northern coast. Two thirds come from the iron-rich soils of Tamar Valley, a region which runs along the Tamar River. The final third is sourced from Pipers River, Tasmania’s northernmost wine region which surrounds the much smaller river of the same name, roughly 20 kilometres to the north-east.

Vintage

The 2024 season in Tasmania brought a welcome lift in yields and excellent fruit quality, following several smaller vintages. Winter rainfall and a mild spring supported early, even budburst, while consistently warm, dry conditions through summer accelerated ripening and produced one of the region’s earliest harvests in recent years. Clean, well-balanced fruit was picked across all major varieties, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and sparkling parcels showing particular promise. Overall, 2024 delivered bright, pure cool-climate wines with vibrant acidity, strong varietal expression and a clear sense of regional finesse.

Vinification

After picking, most of the grapes were destemmed, with a small portion being left as whole bunches. The fruit was cold soaked and gently macerated for about 10 days before being basket pressed direct into 500-litre French oak puncheons (17% new). The wine matured for 10 months and was lightly filtered prior to bottling in January 2025.

Tasting Notes & Technical Details

Bright crimson in colour, this Pinot Noir has beautifully pure red fruit aromas, with a little pomegranate and a touch of spice. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and has a good depth of fruit that is balanced by a fresh acidity. The finish is long, with fine, persistent tannins.
