Antichi Poderi Jerzu is a cooperative winery based in the village of Jerzu, within the historical Ogliastra region on Sardinia’s east coast. The cooperative was founded in 1950 by the village doctor, Josto Miglior, who convinced 45 grape growers to join forces to produce better wine. Today, Antichi Poderi Jerzu unites 430 growers from almost all the village families, led by head winemaker Biagio Boi and consultant winemaker Franco Bernabei.

Jerzu is a remote, untouched village that maintains many of its age-old traditions. This affinity to history and tradition is reflected in the village’s population, which boasts the world record ratio of centenarians to population: of the 3,200 inhabitants, four are over 100 years old. The cooperative’s 650 hectares of vineyards are in prime hillside areas stretching from the Gennargentu mountains, in the heart of the island, to the coast. The grapes grown here are renowned for their flavour intensity. The range of locations and micro-climatic conditions provides Biagio and Franco with multiple blending options along with opportunities to express the unique character of certain plots.

The ‘Telavè’ Vermentino and the ‘Bantu’ Cannonau are young and fresh expressions of these classic Sardinian varieties. Each represents excellent value. The ‘Lucean Le Stelle’ Vermentino comes from a stricter selection of grapes. It is fermented in stainless steel vats before ageing for six months on its lees, giving a more intense expression of the variety. Their top Cannonau, the ‘Marghia’, hails from 30-year-old vines 500 metres above sea level. Aged in Slavonian oak for 12 months, it has intense aromas of ripe blackberry, forest fruits and a touch of spice.

Vineyards

The grapes used to produce Telavè come from vineyards located on gentle slopes along the coastline of the Ogliastra region. The proximity to the sea moderates temperatures, creating an ideal environment for the vines and slowing the ripening of the grapes, ultimately resulting in higher levels of acidity and concentration of flavour at harvest. The vineyards are south-facing and lie 350 - 450 metres above sea level on varied soils, mostly of calcareous - schist origin, upon which Vermentino thrives. The vines are 20 years old on average and trained in the Guyot system.

Vintage

The 2025 growing season in Ogliastra was shaped by contrasts but ultimately delivered very promising quality. A mild, relatively dry winter was followed by a wet spring, particularly in the east of the island, which replenished water reserves and drove vigorous vegetative growth. Spring humidity brought downy mildew pressure, but careful vineyard work kept bunches clean and healthy. Summer turned hot and bright, with marked diurnal temperature swings helping to moderate the heat and preserve acidity in the grapes. Localised hail and a spell of drought in mid-August reduced yields in some exposed parcels, yet the surviving fruit reached harvest in excellent condition, combining ripe Mediterranean flavours with good structure and freshness.

Vinification

Whole grapes were placed directly into the press for a gentle 6–8 hour cold maceration to extract delicate aromatics while preserving fruit purity. Soft pressing yielded 70–80% of the must, which was settled at 10°C in stainless steel before racking and controlled fermentation. The wine was then aged on fine lees for a minimum of three months to build body, texture and complexity, followed by at least one month of bottle maturation to fully integrate flavours and refine the aromatic profile.

Tasting Notes & Technical Details

Pale lemon in colour. The nose is perfumed and lifted, with aromas of fresh citrus fruit and hints of fennel. On the palate, the wine is balanced and well-structured, with a refreshing acidity that carries the aromas onto the crisp finish.
