Cantina di Monteforte is a cooperative winery in the eastern part of Soave Classico. They farm over 1,200 hectares of vines, many in the Soave Classico DO, where they have some of the best vineyard sites, as well as some outside of the Classico zone.

60% of Cantina di Monteforte’s vines are planted on hills, facing south and south-east, which lend themselves to riper, fuller styles of wine compared to most produced in Soave. The co-op has 600 members and harvests about 20,000 tonnes of grapes a year. Cool breezes blow through the Alpone Valley from the foothills of the Dolomites to the north, ensuring warm days and cool nights. This helps with the accumulation of aromatic characters in the grapes. For years, Matt Thomson of Blank Canvas has worked with Gaetano Tobin, who was the director of the cooperative for almost 20 years. Gaetano passed away in 2021, and now winemaker Selen Uyar oversees production. Together with Matt, Selen ensures that Gaetano’s legacy and unshakeable commitment to quality live on.

We believe the two Soave Classico wines made by Cantina di Monteforte offer some of the best value in our portfolio. Soave is a region which is often overlooked. As a result, wines of this quality produced in more sought-after areas would command significantly higher prices. The ‘Terre di Monteforte’, sourced from vineyards in the eastern part of Soave Classico, is unoaked and defined by a waxy texture and fragrant fruit. The ‘Vigneto Montegrande’ is one of the best Soave Classicos currently being produced. A small percentage of the blend is fermented in oak, giving the wine more complexity and depth. The `Terre di Monteforte` Pinot Grigio Rosato is fresh and crisp with a delicious strawberry perfume that gives way to a vibrant cherry character on the palate, while a savoury note adds depth to the lively acidity.

Vineyards

The Garganega grapes for this single-vineyard wine are grown in the Montegrande vineyard, one of Soave's 33 UGAs, a south/southeast facing hillside site with superb exposure where the average vine age is over 30 years old. The vineyard is situated 250-300 metres above sea level and its basalt soils are volcanic in origin. This site produces wines that are riper and fuller than those of most others produced in Soave Classico.

Vintage

Like in previous years, the winter of 2023 was cold with little rainfall. Frequent spring rain helped compensate for the lack of moisture in the preceding months. The arrival of a hot and dry summer allowed the vines' vegetative cycle to progress nicely. The harvest was overall very successful, with good yields and quality, especially in the hillier vineyard sites.

Vinification

The wine was made using small-batch vinification in mid-October. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were gently pressed using special presses. The must was fermented in a combination of French barrique for approximately one year and tanks for approximately three months before bottling.
