Made by Framingham winemaker Andrew Brown, Ribbonwood takes its name from the Ribbonwood trees, New Zealand’s tallest, native deciduous tree species, which grow around the Ribbonwood vineyard in Renwick, Marlborough. Sensitive to the environmental responsibility they have for their surroundings, Ribbonwood’s viticulture team have planted more than 1,000 native shrubs and trees to enhance the biodiversity of the vineyard, alongside improving their wastewater management systems. They also use lightweight bottles and recycled cartons to reduce their carbon footprint.
Produced in a modern style, Ribbonwood specialises in making wines from mature to old vines in Marlborough’s Wairau Valley. The Sauvignon Blanc vines are grown in the original Ribbonwood Block, near Renwick, which is planted in an unusual east-west direction. This aspect provides shade on the rows' south side and enhances the fruit's gooseberry aromatics. In the cellar, they have dozens of small parcels, each fermented in individual tanks of varying sizes. This allows plenty of room to handle multiple picking times, yeast strains and temperatures, resulting in optimal blending options.
Fresh and expressive, Ribbonwood’s Sauvignon Blanc has racy acidity and passion fruit aromatics. The Pinot Noir is ripe yet vibrant, with summer fruit compote flavours and savoury, dried herb notes from a touch of oak ageing.
Vineyards
The grapes for this Pinot Noir are harvested from six vineyard sites in the Wairau Valley. All vineyards are trained using the 2-cane/cordon Guyot system with north-south row orientation for uniformity of sun exposure and corresponding fruit ripening.
Vintage
Another very wet winter, however, late spring was drier and more settled, leading to good growth and colour in all vineyards and varieties. Yield estimates were in line with long term averages. A hot and wet summer provided a roller coaster of weather events but fortunately, a proactive vineyard management regime throughout spring and summer minimised any botrytis infection to almost zero, and the cold nights helped the fruit retain acidity and aroma. Yields were on target and overall, a much better vintage than expected.
Vinification
Upon arrival at the winery each parcel was given a short cold soak period before fermentation commenced to harness varietal character. Plunging was gentle and once a day with an aim to retain elegance in the wine. Once dry, wines remained on skins until the tannin balance looked approachable. Components were aged for seven months in seasoned oak prior to being blended and bottled in February 2024.
Tasting Notes & Technical Details
The wine opens with aromas of dark cherry and cranberry with subtle nuances of mocha. The palate is juicy with soft tannins and persistent flavour on the long finish.
