Based in Sierra de Gredos, Pegaso was born from a collaboration between Rioja native Telmo Rodríguez, his long-time business partner Pablo Eguzkiza and two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr. They named the winery in tribute to Pegaso, a famous 1940s Spanish car manufacturer prized by collectors with an eye for sleek, classic design.

Sierra de Gredos is a range of mountains west of Madrid, spanning the provinces of Toledo, Madrid and Avila. The region’s rugged landscape, with granite-laced soils, has been home to numerous winemaking families for generations and boasts a wealth of old vine Garnacha. Telmo and Pablo were gripped by the potential of these vineyards while travelling across Spain in search of forgotten regions. Telmo explains that “this extraordinary vineyard was growing wild, without a winemaker, oenologist or engineer: it was an orphan.”

In 1999, they purchased their first vineyard, Arrebatacapas, in the village of Cebreros (known for its rare ‘pizarra’ red slate soils) with Carlos Sainz Sr, who lived locally and shared their passion for Sierra de Gredos’ winemaking potential. Together, the trio restored Carlos’ 19th-century property in 2005 to house the Pegaso winery.

From 2016, Marc Isart, one of the leading figures in Sierra de Gredos, has made the wines at Pegaso. A founding member of Comando G, Marc’s deep understanding of Sierra de Gredos’ terrain and mastery of Garnacha allow him to produce elegant, expressive wines that capture the essence of this mountain region. As a result, in 2025, Beth Willard named Marc 'Winemaker of the Year' in her inaugural 'Sierra de Gredos Top 100 report' for Tim Atkin.

All the Pegaso vineyards are organically farmed, and the wines are made with minimal intervention to preserve the purest expression of site. ‘Arrebatacapas’ is Pegaso’s flagship wine, made from a steep, 2.1-hectare bush-trained Garnacha plot planted in 1953 at 1,050 metres above sea level. It is farmed organically, surrounded by juniper, rosemary and lavender bushes, and has rare slate soil (almost unheard of in Sierra de Gredos), interwoven with veins of quartz. The ‘Arrebatacapas’ Garnacha is exceptionally elegant and aromatic, with fine, delicate tannins.

Grapes for ‘Pizarra’ (Spanish for slate) are sourced from three sites, including Arrebatacapas. The low-yielding vines on slate soils result in a wine with aromatic intensity, velvety texture and delicate tannins. ‘Granito’ is a blend of over 60-year-old Garnacha from the El Robledillo and El Mojón vineyards, planted at an elevation of 850-900 metres. The granitic soils, prevalent across the Sierra de Gredos region, result in a wine that is powerful yet restrained, with a savoury profile and supple tannic structure.

For ‘Zeta’, Telmo and Pablo work with 60-year-old bush vine Garnacha, sourced across three different vineyards (the El Robledillo, El Mojón, and El Presidente) with an elevation of 750-900 metres. The soils here are a combination of the ‘pizarra’ red slate and granite. The most accessible of the range, ‘Zeta’ is softer on the palate, with crunchy red fruit characters and herbaceous undertones.

Vineyards

Telmo and Pablo discovered this extraordinary 2.1-hectare Arrebatacapas vineyard in 1999. This particularly steep, south-facing vineyard was the first site for their Pegaso project. Planted in 1953, the bush-trained Garnacha vines grow at the top of the mountain, at an elevation of 1060m, surrounded by junipers, rosemary, and lavender. The soils here are low fertility pure red-brown slate, with quartz veins passing through the slate, making this site even more unique. The resulting yields are as low as 15 hectolitres per hectare.

Vintage

2022 began with a mild and dry winter and spring, resulting in a delay in the growing cycle of about 15 days compared to the previous year. However, by mid-May the first heatwave arrived and accelerated vegetative growth, and encouraged an early flowering. The high temperatures, sunshine hours, and lack of rain led to a exceptional fruit set, especially for the Garnacha vines. Harvest began 13 days earlier than the previous vintage on the 23rd September - one of the earliest harvests in history!

Vinification

The grapes were picked by hand in small boxes and attentively selected. Upon arrival to the winery, the grapes were crushed, and fermented with indigenous yeast in a mix of oak, stainless steel vats and clay pots. The wine was then aged for approximately 12 months in used 600L oak barrels, followed by 6 months in stainless steel tanks, before bottling with no fining and filtering and with minimal sulphur.

Tasting Notes & Technical Details

This is a light coloured, very aromatic and characterful Garnacha. Notes of ripe raspberries and black cherries, alongside subtle fragrant notes of hibiscus, and herbs on the nose. This elegant wine boasts a full-bodied profile with delicate tannins that gracefully coat the palate. The juicy fruit is well balanced with the bright acidity, complemented by a savoury undertone on the finish.
