Adding the Montes wines to our portfolio in 2014 was the realisation of a long-held ambition following many years admiring what Aurelio Montes was achieving in Chile. The winery was founded in 1987 by the visionary quartet Aurelio, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand. Aurelio explains, “Our philosophy was simple - to produce excellent quality wines at a level which didn’t exist in Chile at the time.”

Aurelio Montes is widely credited with pioneering Chile’s quality revolution. His ability to identify potential in previously unknown sites, has led to the creation of appellations which now produce some of Chile’s finest wines. The Colchagua Valley is a perfect example of this. Aurelio first came to the area in his 20s and became fascinated by the then-barren landscape of Apalta, where Montes are based today. Apalta translates to ‘poor soils’, referencing the area's alluvial soils comprised predominantly of sandy loam and clay, as well as granite on the steep hillsides. Though a difficult environment for traditional agriculture, Aurelio sensed its potential for high-quality grape growing. Starting in these vineyards, he applied a rigorous, quality-focused approach to farming, resulting in low yields and perfectly ripe fruit. Their long-standing dedication to sustainability has resulted in them becoming B-Corp certified in 2024.

Since the 1990s, Montes have made some of their finest red wines in Apalta, including ‘Folly’ and ‘Alpha M’. The ‘Folly’ Syrah is sourced from a single parcel known as ‘Finca Apalta’ on Apalta’s highest, steepest slopes. ‘Alpha M’, which hails from the same site, is a classic Bordeaux blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Both wines offer different but equally complex interpretations of Apalta. Since the 90s, the estate has campaigned extensively for the area to receive DO status, which was finally achieved in 2018.

Aurelio also blends Apalta fruit with sites in the greater Colchagua Valley. The ‘Purple Angel’ blends Carménère with a little Petit Verdot from exceptional sites in Apalta and Marchigüe. The resulting deeply flavoured, structured red has received 97+ points from James Suckling in its last four vintages. Just 25 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, the landscape of Marchigüe is much flatter than in Apalta, with vineyards planted on clay soils with excellent water retention. Montes also produce the ‘Taita’ Cabernet Sauvignon from vines in this coastal area.

Montes Classic Series

The fact that the outstanding ‘Classic Series’ is Montes’ entry point says a lot about this producer. All the grapes are hand-picked from estate-owned vineyards across DO Valle Central. The Sauvignon Blanc is made in a fresh, unoaked style highlighting the pristine fruit. Richer on the palate, 30% of the Chardonnay is fermented in new French oak for six months, creating texture and complexity seldom found in Chardonnay at this price. The Merlot offers plummy, exuberant fruit that makes this wine so appealing. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec display the depth of colour and flavour this region lends to its red wines. These wines offer outstanding quality for the price.

Vineyards

The vineyards are located in diverse areas of the Central Valley region of Chile, predominantly in the Colchagua Valley sub-region, at Montes' Apalta and El Arcángel de Marchigüe estates. This is the second vintage in which grapes from cooler parts of the Maule and Curicó Valleys have been included, adding fresh fruit and smoothness on the palate, thanks to the climate in these more mountainous areas, where deep soils and good availability of water allows for the harvest of grapes of very high quality. The more extreme conditions in the Marchigüe vineyards (persistent wind, long hours of sunlight, and poor soils with a lot of alluvial material) give the wine a deeper colour, as well as great tension and body. Apalta, on the other hand, with its deeper soils and better availability of water, adds diversity to the aromas and unctuousness on the palate.

Vintage

The 2023 season started with a wetter winter than the previous season. Spring saw uniform bud burst despite the presence of frost. The cold spring transitioned into a dry, cool summer moderated by marine influence, creating slow ripening conditions that delayed harvest by approximately 10 days to March 10-April 10.

Vinification

Grapes were hand selected, crushed, and cool-macerated at 10ºC for 2 days. Selected yeasts were then added to begin alcoholic fermentation; this lasted 10–15 days. The wine was racked from its skins and remained in stainless steel tanks until complete malolactic fermentation had taken place. 40% of the wine was aged in 225-litre French oak barrels for 6 months before blending and bottling.

Tasting Notes & Technical Details

Bright ruby red in colour, the wine’s predominant aromas are of fresh red cherry and raspberry. There are also notes of blackberry and red plum, mixed with the toasted aromas acquired by the time in French oak, including hazelnut and pistachio, as well as notes of vanilla and toffee, lending the wine great complexity. The palate is balanced and fresh, with medium body and a long finish.
