Famille Perrin move to Liberty Wines

Liberty Wines is delighted to be appointed UK and Ireland agent for Famille Perrin, one of the most recognisable names in the Southern Rhône.

One of the largest vineyard owners in the region, Famille Perrin have over 300 hectares stretching across all the key appellations, from Côtes-du-Rhône to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and from Vinsobres to the Ventoux.

Nine members of the fifth and sixth generations of the family now manage the extensive vineyard holdings and grower partnerships. They have an intimate knowledge of the diverse climates and soils, and experience has shown that the wines are greater when made with a blend of Southern Rhône grape varieties rather than a single variety. The Perrin family started farming organically in 1950 at Château de Beaucastel with the strong belief that it helps to convey the sense of place in the finished wine.

David Gleave MW says: “I have long admired the Perrin family for their unstinting commitment to excellence.  Their wines, whether Famille Perrin, Château de Beaucastel or Miraval, have a signature stamp of quality that is derived from their knowledge of and work in the vineyards of the Southern Rhône (and beyond).  We think these wines fit perfectly into our portfolio and are delighted to build upon the strong foundations laid by Fields Morris & Verdin.”

The Wines

The Famille Perrin wines are classic expressions of the Southern Rhône villages and offer great value. Freshness is key to the Luberon Blanc and Luberon Rosé, sourced within the cooler Parc Régional de Luberon, and the Ventoux Rouge from the slopes of Mount Ventoux. The Perrin family manage the vineyards for both Côtes-du-Rhônes: the Blanc is sourced from Cairanne and Jonquières, while the Grenache and Syrah for the Rouge comes from the cooler climate of Vinsobres, supplemented by 20% Mourvèdre from Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Saint-Maurice. The poised Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, grown on stony terraces, is made using the same viticultural and vinification techniques employed at Château de Beaucastel.

The Nature wines come from the family’s certified organic vineyards across the Côtes-du-Rhône - the Rosé from the 10-hectare ‘Grand Prébois’ vineyard in Orange and Blanc from further north, close to the village of Vinsobres. The Rouge Nature is sourced from vineyards north of Orange, where the chalk and clay soil lends depth and purity of fruit to the wine.

The Les Crus wines highlight the diversity of certain Southern Rhône Crus, chosen for their distinctive soils and characters. The Vacqueyras ‘Les Christins’ is sourced from vines aged 50 years on average lying south of the Dentelles de Montmirail, while the Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Les Sinards’ Blanc is made in tiny quantities from the 2.5-hectare ‘Clos du Château’ plot near to Beaucastel. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Les Sinards’ Rouge is sourced from a neighbouring plot, and from some of the young vines, under 50 years old, at Beaucastel.

The Sélections Parcellaires wines shine a light on the Southern Rhône Valley’s best sites. The Vinsobres ‘Les Hauts de Julien’ is from the northernmost limit of the Southern Rhône at an altitude of 300 metres, providing a cooler climate for Syrah. This organically farmed single vineyard, co-planted with 90-year-old Grenache and Syrah, lies on hillside terraces of limestone rock, stony soils and clay, lending the wine both concentration and a stunning purity of fruit.
