Liberty Wines scoops IWSC On-trade Supplier 2019
The International Wine & Spirit Competition Awards Banquet took place at Guildhall, City of London last night and we are delighted to have been named the IWSC On-trade Supplier 2019. Tim Tweedy (pictured centre) collected the trophy from Sir George Fistonich, IWSC President (left) and Mark Jones of Riedel UK (right).
The judges were impressed by our "outstanding service", "all round list, supply, training and passion", and "interesting and ever-evolving wine catalogue, very good wine supporting programme, extremely pleasant wine reps, decent pricing and impressive late ordering options."
Thank you to our customers and producers for your continued support and to our team for providing the best possible service to our customers.
It was an award-winning evening for three of our producers too: Sandeman collected the Port Trophy for their 40 Year Old Tawny; Piper-Heidsieck scooped the Vintage Champagne Trophy for their 2012 Vintage; and the Morris of Rutherglen Old Premium Rare Liqueur Rutherglen Muscat received the Fortified Wine Trophy. The judges commented on these wines:
Fortified Wine Trophy
Morris of Rutherglen Old Premium Rare Liqueur Rutherglen Muscat NV
"Delicate but huge, with all sorts of nuts, dried fruits and chocolate. The prunes and figs are deep and refreshing, while the cocoa, hazelnut and mocha keep it layered with many different textures. This is an outstandingly well-made example, with a great balance and fantastically long finish of dates and black coffee."
Sandeman 40 Year Old Tawny Port NV
"Golden oak colour with gleaming amber brushstrokes. Glacier fruits, sugarplums, citrus flower water and cardamom. Beautifully rich but which stops short of unctuous by a freshness and vibrancy in the mouth. The sweetness is counterbalanced by a savoury, nutty complexity which dries the wine off on the warm finish. A truly exceptional wine which has superb poise and elegance, worthy for a wine of this age and stature."
Vintage Champagne Trophy
Piper-Heidsieck Vintage 2012
"Bright lemon straw colour. Beautiful persistent thread of moonlight silver tiny bubbles. Gorgeous scents of rising dough, roast lemon, baked figs, toasting almonds, chalky flinty smoky scents riding on a sea breeze. The palate is complex, vivid and sustained, gorgeous froth with scented cream. The palate exhibits great harmony, flows wonderfully and majestically to a long, sustained finish. A true gold."
Gold medals were awarded earlier to the Sandeman 30 Year Old Tawny Port and Bride Valley Rosé 'Bella' 2014:
Sandeman 30 Year Old Tawny Port NV (Gold medal)
"Deep reddish amber colour. A glorious but subtle nose, with hints of dried flowers, sweet chestnuts, crystallised and fresh citrus peel with a good dollop of Seville orange marmalade. Svelte, velvety approach, beautiful backbone of nutty wood notes and tannins, discreetly clothed in smooth satiny flavours. Superb integration. This wine is absolutely mesmerising for its sublime restraint and powerful control. An absolute delight to taste."
Bride Valley Rosé 'Bella' 2014 (Gold medal)
"Salmon pink; sophisticated smoky and raspberry notes. This is classy and complex, with a nutty, smoky and creamy character. Lovely autolysis and a palate that excites througout. Elegant, regal and a classic wine. Stylish, with a good future."
